We are working with the Belgium branch of Dutch developer Wereldhave on Belle-Île shopping centre in Liège. Our scope covers the architecture and interior design for an 8,000 sqm extension, full refurbishment of the existing 20,000 sqm mall, and developing a new brand positioning.

Belle-Île is located in an exceptionally natural environment, on an island on the Canal de l’Ourthe surrounded with extensive greenery, fitted with multiple footpaths for joggers, bikers and wanderers. We are therefore taking this opportunity to connect the scheme to its environment, opening it to the outdoors, creating restaurant terraces and playgrounds, and even a giant climbing mall. And naturally we are aiming at the highest BREEAM standards in terms of sustainability.

Using fragmented mass, the building’s shell combines facetted fibre cement panels and a river-like glass roof flowing down the main entrance, inspired by the movement of tectonic forces and its geological process, which generously invites daylight and establishes a strong connection with the surrounding landscape.

The new scheme will help to revitalise the tenant mix and engage the next generation of shoppers. It is scheduled for completion in 2017.
